How we charge

We hope that you have had fun viewing the projects on our web site. You may have noticed that our projects differ greatly in style from one to another. That is because our philosophy is to treat our clients and their homes and business as the unique individuals they are.

We understand it can be challenging to work with an interior design firm since it is a completely un-regulated field. It is equally challenging for us to create an easily understandable fee structure when projects differ greatly from one another.

The breakdowns below covers the full use of our resources and expertise during the time engaged. The client will additionally be required to pay for all products and outside services either directly and/or as a reimbursement to us. We will provide invoices and receipts to help you keep track of the costs involved with your project.

Jana Design does not represent any product lines exclusively. Often there are better options for your budget shopping retail than through the design houses where goods are marked up to accommodate the designers “discount”. There are many places to shop where we get 20-40% off of the price of goods or services. We are then able to pass   great savings on to you. This means that we have little vested interest in whether you choose the higher end or budget approach.

If you have a specific amount of money set aside for your project it is best to tell us from the start. We can help you determine how to get the most for your budget, or bring you up to speed on how much what you want to do will actually cost.

We have many contractors, cabinetmakers, carpet, and tile installers, window treatment manufactures and installers for fabric treatments, blinds and wood shutters that we know and love to work with. We are also very happy to work with anyone you prefer. We love to meet new qualified craftsmen especially if they are already trusted by you.

This is how we break things down at Jana Design:

STEP ONE:

  1. Basic walk through (1-2 hours)
    • For a $150.00* initial visit fee we will come to your space and access the requirements of the project. We will give you ideas of what we can do and talk about color, flow and specific solutions to your problems. It is typical for us to leave this visit with a plan of how you would like us to proceed and a monetary advance to do so. When this occurs we give you the first continuing hour- FREE!

OR

  1. Walk through with COLOR CONSULTATION (3-4 hours)
    • For  $350.00* we will come to your space and help you create a plan to follow through on your own or with Jana and her team.  We will bring our color swatches and help you map out the potential of changes you could make in the immediate or eventual future. For some this is all you may need.

Most will call us for follow-up consultations at specific junctures in their project when they have more decisions to make for a continuing fee of $100.00 per hour. When this occurs we give you the first continuing hour- FREE!

* If you are located outside of a 25 minute commuting range, an additional fee will be charged for travel time.

STEP TWO:

If your project is specific enough we can determine an approximate fee for what you would like us to do, based on $100.00* per hour, paid in advance in 10-hour intervals (2 hour min.). Once the defined project is accomplished with a set of detailed plans and/or sources you can choose how to proceed:

  1. Supervise yourself:
    Some of our clients have the free time (or a staff) to manage their own projects, supervise the subs (contractors, painters, carpenters…) every day or shop for their own furnishings and accessories…

OR

  1. Jana Design on call:
    Our clients feel free to call us on an “as needed bases” when specific decisions or changes need to be made.  We are happy to collaborate until the project is completed and bill for these hours monthly. We can be on site as much as is needed to assure a successful outcome and bill accordingly.

OR

  1. We do it all:
    Most however rely on our staff to follow through from start to finish.. We will shop for you or with you, arrange for deliveries and be on site to receive and set things up. We will oversee your construction or painting project by starting or/and ending every day on site while remaining on call to the contractors or artisans, as they need us. This process is based on $100.00 per hour, in advance, usually in 10-hour intervals.

Often, on larger projects, our clients prefer a flat fee, based on 20% of the price of goods purchased and the services contracted. Once the initial design process has been completed on an hourly retainer, we will arrive at the budget to proceed. Unless there are significant changes during the process we should be able to determine and negotiate a fee and pay schedule based on the scope of the work. This allows you to estimate and anticipate the whole budget from the start.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES:

Buying for Bachelors/ Bachelorettes:

We suggest you start with the basic walk through (above) (1-2 hours).  From there you can choose #1, 2 or 3 from the list under STEP TWO above. Either way we will follow through until you have accomplished the complete vision you have for your space.

Selling your Home:

STEP ONE:
Basic assessment (3-4 hours):

For a consulting fee of $350.00*, Jana will come to your home and give you a detailed list of how to “generalize” your home, recommend cost effective solutions to condition or design problems and enhance the overall sell-ability of your property. For some this is all you may need.

STEP TWO:
Staging to sell (time TBD):

After your $350.00* assessment we will pack away what isn’t working for you, augment with appropriate accessories, and oversee the painters and professionals needed to resolve your issues. Or we will work magic if your property is empty.

A budget can be estimated after the initial basic assessment based on an hourly rate of $100.00* per. The scope of work to be supervised and resources required will determine the time it will take. If you continue the staging process with us we will gift you the first continuing hour of work, FREE!

* If you are located outside of a 25 minute commuting range, an additional fee will be charged for travel time.

Moving to a New Home:

STEP ONE:

For a $500.00* flat fee, we recommend that you have us come to your current home for 3-4 hours and take stock of what you would like to move. We will measure, photograph and inventory your treasures before they are packed. Next, we go to your new home or office to make a plan with you or for you of how it will all work and fit.

  • For a consulting fee of $350.00* we will go through your new home with you for one, 2-3 hour visit and give you detailed suggestions for window treatments, flooring and color schemes We will make suggestions for potential improvements you may want to address sooner, or later. When contract with us to do any of the projects discussed we will gift you the first continuing hour, FREE!
  • For $50.00 per room, we will create a ground plan for your movers with attached photos. This makes it easy for them to load the truck and plan your move.
  • OR For an additional $100.00 per room we will make patterns of your furniture pieces and arrange them in the rooms so you can get a sense of the spaces.
  • If you would like us to supervise the necessary painting, fixes and changes, purchase and install your window treatments, furnishings and accessories we will be glad to proceed on an hourly basis at the rate of $100.00 per hour usually provided in advance in 10-hour intervals. We should, barring changes to the plan, be able to estimate the scope of time needed in advance.

If we have been involved in your move from the first consultation in your old home and follow you through to your new home we will be happy to negotiate a rate that will incorporate each of the ala-carte items described above.

Art Hanging:

We charge a day rate of $750.00* per day for a team of 3 and usually get the job done in one (9-hour) day. If we need to come back a second day we charge a minimum ½ day rate of $450.00. We will supply the hardware and add the reimbursement to our bill.

Additional Art related services will be billed hourly at a rate of $100.00 per or negotiated as a project.

Need to Organize:
 
STEP ONE:
Basic assessment (1-2 hours)

For a one time consulting fee of $350.00* you will get Jana and her professional organizer, Vonnie. As a team they can help you determine if the root of your problem is space planning, insufficient storage or furniture or the need for better systems. If you are a person who is motivated to make the necessary changes yourself, this may be all that is needed.

STEP TWO:

  1. Organize:
    Many of our clients retain Vonnie, at a fee of $45.00* per hour to make the changes necessary in your systems with you. This is usually scheduled in blocks of several hours at a time and paid for upon scheduling.

OR

  1. Organize and design:
    If additional design time is required to supply you with the tools and environment that will support the necessary systems, Vonnie and Jana will collaborate for the fee of $100.00 per hour. Yes, that is 2 for the price of one. We will shop for you and/or with you and implement the plan.

Magical Makeovers (as seen on TV):

STEP ONE:
Basic walk through (1-2 hours)

For a $150.00* initial visit fee we will come to your space and access the requirements of the project. When you schedule your makeover we will deduct the initial visit fee, making this visit FREE!

STEP TWO:
The BIG day(s)

For $1,250.00* per day (based on 9-hour days) plus expenses (furniture accessories painters, movers...) We can accomplish what it would take others weeks to get done. You will be back up and running within days as opposed to the usual dragged out decorating project.

JANA DESIGN on location, USA or INTERNATIONAL:

We have been fortunate to develop relationships with our clients that last for years. For some we are now on our second or third home as they grow and move on. When we do remote projects we usually negotiate a day or weekly rate, plus expenses needed for living and working in the city or country. Each of these projects is so diverse that we cannot sum it up here.

Color Consultation:

  1. One initial visit (2-3 hours) is $350.00.
    We bring our color system, take you through a process and leave you with swatches of the colors that interest you.For some of our clients, this is all that they need. Most, then call us back as they move on to other areas or projects for an hourly rate of $100.00 per hour.
  1. A second visit (1-1/2-2 hours):
    For an additional $250.00, we prepare 11”x 17” color samples of your choices and strategically place them around the room, office or home. Sometimes this process leads to some changes and experimentation which we will work through with you for an hourly rate of $100.00 per hour.

  2. A color plan (hours tbd):
    This process depends on the size and complexity of you space. We will draw a ground plan and literally map the colors and the order numbers. It is best to keep this on an hourly rate of $100.00 per hour since the time needed will vary.

  3. The flawless finish (1-4 hours):
    Once the priming and preparation is done we paint samples of the colors on each wall, it is a final check for all of us. . It is best to keep this on an hourly rate of $100.00 per hour since the time needed will vary.
