Wallflowers

Jana Design Interiors

When creating a flower arrangement in a vase or on a wall, there are two principles to keep in mind:  The first principle involves the choice of flowers displayed.  In the words of Master Gardener Valerie Walker, “Always use a FILLER, a THRILLER, and a SPILLER!”

The FILLER is the background.  It adds coverage and texture to start.

The THRILLER is the “eye candy”, both in scale and color.

The SPILLER softens the line of the vase or composition by trailing over the edge or boundary, ultimately leading the eye back up to the THRILLERS!

The second principle is the “RULE OF 3’s.”  In this case, one vase was too small.  Two vases would be static; the viewer’s eye would bounce from side to side.  Using three vases makes the negative space more interesting.  The viewer’s eye is led in a circular motion, which is always more pleasing.  The resulting composition has more balance and dimension.
